Bio-based leather materials: a buyer’s guide

Explore Re-Bloom colour cards and learn how to assess bio-based inputs, formulation evidence and samples for a material project.

Understand the material, beyond its origin story

Bio-based describes an input derived from biomass. A leather-like composite can also contain a coating, binder, backing and additives. It should not be assumed to be entirely plant-derived, plastic-free, recyclable or biodegradable. Ask for the composition and construction of the exact S-series reference under consideration.

Match claims to the selected reference

Re-Bloom uses fruit and plant themes to introduce material directions. Some website origin groupings are provisional display assignments; they are not confirmed formulation evidence for an individual SKU. Before specifying apple, bamboo, coffee or another input in a product brief, request the matching material documentation. For a percentage claim, also confirm what is measured, the method and the identified sample.

Evaluate the surface and intended use together

Start with a real series and colour number from the published colour cards. Review grain, colour and handfeel on physical samples, then check thickness, backing, processing and the tests your application requires. A botanical input does not establish abrasion resistance, outdoor suitability or a particular service life.

Request evidence alongside the sample

Share the intended product, shortlisted S-series references, target colours, quantity and destination. State which origin, composition or certification information your project needs, so the team can check availability of matching evidence. Assess the resulting swatch and prototype before making a production or marketing claim.

Surface directions are visual references. Confirm construction, performance and colour with a physical sample and matching documentation.
