DESIGN & SPACE

The shape of everyday life

A chair, a curve, a surface turned towards the light. Through everyday objects, materials bring touch, color and space into relation.

The character of a room can begin with a chair. Its seat receives the light, its arms draw a boundary, and a curved corner reveals the material’s thickness. A leather-like surface participates in the volume and silhouette of the furniture. The same color carries a different visual weight across a flat plane and a soft curve.

A fine grain can bring quietness to a broad surface; a more defined texture introduces rhythm at closer range. Set beside wood, metal or fabric, the difference in touch becomes part of the room. Design can unfold at a small scale: a seam, a finished edge, the precise boundary where a surface meets its structure.

Color is never isolated within a room. Deep brown, burgundy and muted green can answer different woods and wall finishes, revealing fresh variations as the light moves. Returning a material to the relationship between object and environment allows its presence to be understood alongside the things around it.

SHANGJIAN begins with materials to consider how everyday objects acquire their character. From the broad surface of furniture to the smaller contours of bags and footwear, grain and color find new proportions. A material can be a quiet detail or a defining presence. Through these shifts in scale, a world of possible forms unfolds.
